幻の列車 - National Chief

これまで幻の列車として取り上げたものは、すべて計画だけで走っていない列車でした。今回は、走っていたけど、名前だけ使われてなかったという、ややこしい列車。

じゃ、名前がなかったのか？ということじゃないらしい。計画では、この National Chief　は、西海岸の Los Angeles から東海岸の　Washington DC までという大陸横断路線でした。列車の正体は LA　〜　Chicago は　Southwest Chief で、Chicago 〜 Washington DC は Capitol Limited だったのです。つまり2つの違う列車が、シカゴで名前だけ変えていたらしいのです。つまり車両はそのままってことなんだとか。

96年の時刻表には「シカゴで乗り換えなしの列車がデビューする」というようなことが載っていました。この乗り換えなしのサービスは97年１月から始まり、98年5月まで続きました。いまはシカゴでいったん降りなければいけないので、完全に別の列車として扱われていますが、実は今もまだ同じ車両らしい。シカゴに着いてお客さんが降りると、今度は違う列車として準備とかしてるんですね。

このサービスが継続されていたら、列車名は National Chief になる予定だったとか。ホントなのか、どうなのか。。

そういえば、東海岸方面の寝台といえばビューライナーでした。トンネルのサイズが小さいという事情から、スーパーライナーは使えなかったらしいのです。ですが、Capitol Limited だけはスーパーライナーでした。LAからそのままだから、スーパーライナーだったのか。

なんかマニアックな話になってしまいました。
