CEO解任か？！

AP通信発のニュースで、すこし衝撃的な見出しが出ています。全米のメジャーな新聞も、このニュースを伝えているようです。USA TODAY や Washington Post, CNN など主要なニュースサイトも取り上げています。AP発なので、内容はどこも同じですが。。
"Amtrak President to Be Fired"
タイトルそのままで、まさにトップの解任になりそうです。そのトップはCEOの David Gunn 氏。補助金の必要性を強調していた人です。一方で、ブッシュ政権のアムトラックに対する姿勢は、国の予算で赤字路線は続けていられないというもので、今年は一段と風当たりが強かったかもしれません。
今回、こういった解任になりそうな背景には、ブッシュ政権以下のアンチ・アムトラックと言われている人たちからの圧力的なものもあったのかもしれません。本当にアンチなのかは分かりませんが、アムトラックの主要な収入源である北東部の路線をアムトラックから切り離そうという動きさえも見せています。アンチの代表のように言われているのが、Transportation Secretary を努める日系の Norman Y. Mineta 氏（どうでもいいですが、フジモリ大統領に顔が似ている）。
そうなると、長距離路線をアムトラックだけで続けていくのは、さらに困難なります。日本からの利用客が多い、西海岸とシカゴを結ぶ3路線などのサービス継続も危ういわけです。観光客のみならず、西部の地方にある小さな町などでは、アムトラックを貴重な交通手段としている方々がいます。
結果分かりませんが、今回の解任劇は、自分のようにあくまでも観光の一つとしてアムトラックに乗って来た人たちには関係ないようなニュースに思えるかもしれません。しかし数年後、アムトラック旅行なんてものは過去のものになってしまう可能性も。長距離路線も守ろうと頑張ってきたトップが交代してしまうというのは、なんだか寂しいものですね。。
