昨夜、解任されそうだとエントリーしたら、今度は解任決定のニュースが来ました。AP、ロイター、大手新聞社、主要ニュースサイトが一斉にこのニュースを伝えています。

なんとも痛烈です。これでアムトラックは一つの転換期をむかえます。以下、ロイターの記事を引用。
Amtrak’s board of directors did not give a reason for its decision to dismiss Gunn, but he has resisted many of the broad proposals pushed by the Bush administration to reform business practices at the railroad.
委員会が解任の理由を示さなかったというのが、特徴的。ブッシュ政権が後押しする委員会の提案を拒否し続けた、ということが解任の理由ではないかという見方です。
続いてAPの記事です。
Gunn has repeatedly clashed with the Bush adminstration, especially over federal subsidies for the program.
Amtrak has never made money in its 34-year history. Board Chairman David Laney says Amtrak requires a leader who will aggressively tackle the company’s financial, management and operational challenges.
こちらもブッシュ政権と対立があったことを始めに紹介。2005年2月から続いた補助金の問題が引き金でした。チェアマンの発言は「新しいリーダーの必要性」を説いています。
その「新しいリーダー」はブッシュ政権に近い人物が選ばれるでは、という懸念があります。アムトラックにとってのXデーがいよいよ見え隠れしてきました。
追記：Norman Y. Mineta 氏のコメントが出てましたので、引用します。*Mineta氏はブッシュ政権のSECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION。
“I have known David Gunn many years and respect the work he did to help streamline and stabilize Amtrak. However, it is the job of Amtrak’s board of directors to make decisions that are in the best interest of Amtrak. I am confident in the board’s judgment and its belief that different leadership is needed to address the serious challenges facing the company. The U.S. Department of Transportation stands ready to support Amtrak as it reforms its long distance services, upgrades the Northeast Corridor and establishes new fiscal accountability measures and will continue to work with Congress to ensure the future of intercity passenger rail.”
David Gunn氏をフォローするような言い回しから始めていますが、”I am confident”以下の部分でこの解任劇を後押ししていたことが伝わってきます。後半では ”long distance services”（長距離路線）も守る、というような事も言っています。しかし、これまでのMineta氏の発言は、こんなフォローでは納得できないようなものでした。一方的に、沿線の地域がお金を出せばいい、というのがMineta氏の主張のようですから。。。
Business Week Online では既にこの解任劇について批判が出ていることを伝えています。
New York Times では David Gunn氏のコメントを紹介しています。
“Obviously what their goal is, and it’s been their goal from the beginning, is to liquidate the company.”
their goal の their とは Mineta氏やブッシュ政権周辺の方々やその提案を支持していた議員のことでしょう。goal は今回の解任。”it’s been their goal from the beginning”=「最初からそれが目的だった」という一言は一段と痛烈です。
